Subject:        Trainees and Modernising Scientific Careers

Dear Healthcare Scientist

I'm the trainee representative on the Medical Education England Healthcare Science Board; the independent body that provides professional advice on the planning, education and training of healthcare scientists in England.

Clearly the Modernising Scientific Careers programme is my main focus and now that substantive MSC documents have been published (the UK overview and England action plan, http://www.dh.gov.uk/en/Aboutus/Chiefprofessionalofficers/Chiefscientificofficer/index.htm), I'd like to gauge opinion from current trainee healthcare scientists across life sciences, physiology and clinical engineering/medical physics.

Please forward this on to trainees in your departments, or if you are involved with training and would like to have your say, email me direct at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it with any thoughts, concerns or issues you have with the proposals.

I feel strongly that if current scientists in the NHS do not make their views known then we cannot hope to influence these sort of developments, so please do get in touch!

Regards

Gareth

Lisa Bayliss Award

Do you have a 3rd or 4th year BSc placement student in your department who has excelled in the clinic domain? Have they gone above and beyond your expectations in providing a first class service to your hard of hearing community?

If so then why not nominate them for the Lisa Bayliss Award!!

The BAA is looking for this year’s recipient of the Lisa Bayliss Award! The Lisa Bayliss award has traditionally been given to the student who performed best in the BAAT part 2 practical exams. With the introduction of the BSc, the BAAT exams no longer exist so it has been decided that the Lisa Bayliss award should be given to the student who performs outstandingly over the course of their BSc placement year. The award will be presented at the BAA Conference in November 2010. There is a trophy, certificate and cheque for the winner. Please keep this award in mind when supervising and assessing BSc Students and please send your nominations to This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it by the 1st September 2010. Please see the attached nomination form for further details

We look forward to hearing from you

Hello Students

Welcome to the student section of the BAA website. This section will  provide you with some insight into what is going on within the BAA and the profession from a student perspective. Since November I have been BAA Representative for the  Student and Trainee committee and aim to continue to develop  all the hard work of my predecessor Danny Kearney put in place. The Student and Trainee committee will endeavour to reflect the views of students from across the UK and help to get more students involved in the BAA. We plan to use this website as one of main methods of communication and it will be launched properly in September

Once again there will be a dedicated student session BAA conference in Edinburgh. Building on the success of previous conferences, Edinburgh 2010 is planned to be the biggest BAA conference yet. Please get involved with this aspect of the BAA as big prizes can be won. For instance, last year Lee Sergeant from Aston University won the Oticon student of the year award. He took home a £250 prize and got the chance to make his own ITE hearing aids at Oticon's head quarters.

The student party night will also be arranged at this years conference. Feedback from those who attended last year's night was fantastic. We hope to build on this and get more of you involved. Tickets for this night will now be advertised on the conference registration form. Don't miss out on this one!

Furthermore the BAA is looking for the newest recipient of the Lisa Bayliss Award this year. This prize is based on those who display an exemplarily high standard of clinical skills on their Year 3 clinical placement. A nomination form will be posted on the website shortly

Enjoy your summer - September will come round very quickly!
